Russia Needs New Elections

Russia Needs New Elections

Statement of  International society  «Memorial»

On December, 4th elections to the State Duma of Russian Federation took place.
The coordinated work of observers allowed to reveal mass falsifications during voting and counting of votes. Citizens were convinced: they have to resist deception and manipulations.
Shameless falsification provoked mass protests which Russia has not seen for many years.
Self-appointed successors of Stolypin from ruling party in power assert that they want to save Russia from great shocks. But misrepresentation of results of national will is a direct way to civil disturbance.
In these circumstances, the undue haste with which  the first session of the Duma was convened  only underlines irresponsibility of the power.
We call the parties, claiming to be representatives of opposition, at the first session of the Duma to demand of immediate new elections.
It would be quite logical, that this requirement was also supported by «United Russia» [Edinaya Rossia]. If its leaders really believe that they have fairly won , they should be interested in eliminating all doubts connected with results of voting.
«Memorial» welcomes lastest peaceful mass meetings  in Moscow and other cities as a resurgence of russian people’s civil activity.
«Memorial» supports meetings on December, 17th, some days before the first session of the Duma, and on December, 24th when it will be already clear, whether deputies have heard electors’ voice.
